Have You Tried UAE's Super-sized Blueberries?

Our farmers, Elite Agro, a subsidiary of Yas Holding, cultivates fresh vegetables over 3,000 hectares in four large farms in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. World-class irrigation and agricultural technologies, highly competitive and specialized talent, and the most efficient use of natural resources, such as water, energy, and land, enable the company's dedication to fulfilling the Nation's farming vision.

Elite Agro grew more than 205 tons of premium blueberries in 2021, up 50% from 2020, and is planning to treble its capacity for the 2023 harvest. Elite Agro owns and operates the farm, which produces some of nature's best superfoods such as raspberries, blackberries, and strawberries in the area. However, it is also known for being the only steading in the country that grows blueberries.

"Berries have such a short shelf life but have just become extremely popular with consumers," said Ian Summerfield, CEO of Elite Agro. "Our unique selling feature is our localization." It doesn't get any more fresh than this.

At Al Foah Farm in Al Ain, It takes less than two hours to get the berries from harvest to cool storage; the berries are only handled by two hands: the picker and the consumer, and we preserve all of our product at 2°C to keep it fresh." Thousands of plants and bushes are housed in large greenhouses with water-based cooling systems, where the berries are in full bloom throughout the season.

From January through May, blueberries are picked, while raspberries and blackberries are harvested from October to April. Twenty blueberry-growing greenhouses span a total of 12 hectares, with an average of 5,400 blueberry plants per hectare.

Raspberry and blackberry production is on a smaller scale, with 1.8 hectares and 1.2 hectares of land, respectively. Dazzle, eureka, eureka sunrise, and first blush are four premium blueberry types grown on the property. The plants are imported from Mountain Blue Orchard, an Australian breeder.

During the winter, Elite Agro also grows blueberries in Morocco and Mauritania to serve countries in Northern Europe, while during the summer, its farms in Serbia provide the European market. Elite Agro also intends to enhance production in these nations in order to increase customer supply.
